Personally, I’m against progressive taxes, as well as taxes with a set dollar amount. The former would be unfair to the rich and successful, whereas the latter would destroy the working class.
I think a flat rate sounds like it should at least satisfy most people – the rich aren’t having to pay a higher percentage of their salary, but still pay more in dollar amount.
So far seven states have a flat tax rate as a statewide decision, but should it expand to the federal income tax as well?
It can still be progressive with no absolutely no deductions. You can;t get blood out of a leech so taxing the welfare bunnies won’t get you anything.
yes and it would be most fair.
If you are overweight and way 100 pounds, 200 pounds, 300 pounds, 400 pounds, or even 500 pounds: if your doctor says you need to lose 20% of your weight: of course the heaviest person would have to lose the most and the lightest person would have to lose the least: that’s simple math which has nothing to do with fairness. Same goes for wages. If the overweight lose the same percentage they all walk away healthy. May not be the best analogy but it’s what I got.
Yes. But…EVERYBODY pays it. Corporations, individuals, charitable organizations, even churches. And think what it would to simplify the ridiculously complex gibberish we have as tax codes now. NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE knows what’s in that massive goat screw.
If a person or business is lucky enough, or smart enough to earn a hugongous income, so be it. They should not be punished for that. BUT…they SHOULD be made to pay their share at the flat percentage rate just like everybody else without exception. Being rich is not justification for being ripped off by the feds, nor for being able to avoid paying your share.
Probably never happen, but I would have to agree.
No.
$1 of additional income has more utility to someone making $5.25 an hour than an additional $1 of income to someone making $480.00 per hour (a million annually).
Since marginal utility falls with increasing income, taxing higher incomes makes the most economic sense.
It’s a great idea, but it will never happen in a million years.
I think flat income tax would be great, but the poor who pay low or no taxes would never support it.
a flat tax or a national sales tax would be okay, except knowing government like I do that would just be added onto the existing tax
That would be fairer than it is at present, but even more fair would be a national sales tax. That way, even those who make money "under the table" or even illegally would still be paying "their fair share" of taxes every time they buy something.
Remember that while there is a progressive tax structure in theory, in practice the richer among us can claim more deductions, or hire accountants to find them tax breaks or arrange their finances to avoid paying taxes, so overall they don’t actually pay a higher percentage than others.
I think that would be a step in the right direction. Doing away with all "earned income credit" and other hokey welfare things would help. I’d say have a flat tax, but also have a rather large "untaxed income". Like say 12,000 dollars. Anything above that would be taxed at the same rate. And no one would ever get a tax refund.
Nope. Collected as a Fair Tax.
A flat AMOUNT would only be harmful as long as government spends more than it’s lawfully allowed – so for as long as there are Democrats.
No. The rate would have to be too high to get the revenue we need. Just raise taxes on the super rich and tax capital gains the same rate as we tax income from work. That would give us enough money to pay for all the programs we want AND slowly start paying down the national debt.
